Molten MacBook cable
My MacBook’s power cable melted down last week. At night everything was fine; when I woke up the cable looked like this:
With sadness I went to A Mac (a nearby Apple shop) and showed them my cable. They assured me that buying a new one was my only option. That, or never using my MacBook again after the battery had drained. After some hours of consideration, I reluctantly bought a new cable for a whopping €89.
The next day I called the national Apple telephone number; I figured trying wouldn’t hurt. The lady (she sounded Belgian) asked me if there had been any other damage, actually sounding worried. She then gave me an Issue ID and told me to go to an Apple shop, hand in the broken cable and give them the ID.
About a week later, the A Mac called me and said they had a new cable for me. So now I had two power cables: one replacement, one newly bought. I explained the situation to them, and after 15 minutes of arguing, pointing out that they had told me I was outside of warranty and that buying a new one was the only option, we settled the case by them keeping the replacement and me getting my €89 back.
The oddest part of the story is that a friend of mine experienced exactly the same problem last Friday: happened overnight, exact same position in the cable. And he too bought his MacBook in May/June 2006. And yesterday I found yet another person at university who experienced a melting power cable. Are they all timebombs?
Mijn laptop geeft ineens geen waarschuwing meer als de accu bijna op is, en gaat UIT als die ècht op is… Vroeger gaf ‘ie eerst een 10% waarschuwing, en viel ie in slaap bij minder dan 2%.
Apple maakt gewoon troep.
Hmm, ik weet niet of ik het heel erg eens ben met mijn stelling. Maar ik merk wel een algehele achteruitgang in kwaliteit, de laatste tijd.
Exact same thing just happened to my adapter!
The same thing also happened to me! Mine also from 2006.
Unfortunately I didn’t noticed on time before it burned my HDD
